Procedure Integration portrays the degree to which specialty units share information and empowers start to finish and a solitary interface for the client The Operating Model includes a pledge to how the organization will work Endeavor Architecture This is the sorting out rationale for business procedures and IT framework which mirrors the coordination and normalization prerequisites of the companyââ¬â¢s working model. The Enterprise Architecture gives a drawn out perspective on a companyââ¬â¢s procedure, frameworks, and innovations so as to assemble long haul manageable capacities. IT Engagement Model The IT Engagement Model is the administration instrument that guarantees business and IT anticipates accomplish both nearby and companywide goals. This Model impacts ventures choices guaranteeing that singular arrangements are structured by the undertaking design. The IT Engagement Model gives arrangement among IT and the business destinations of undertakings. 2) The Enterprise Architecture imparts the elevated level business procedure and IT prerequisites of a companyââ¬â¢s working model. This contrasts from IT Architecture to the level of granularity that is introduced. Undertaking Architecture doesn't give the important subtleties to delineate specialized or procedure structure necessities. The IT Architecture created by the IT unit is a progressively itemized engineering of utilizations, information and data, and innovation. IT Architecture when created with an away from of the Enterprise Architecture gives long haul esteem since they give the drawn out vision to quick arrangements. 3) The current market patterns and speed at which innovation and the serious scene is continually changes make it hard for companiesâ to have the option to adjust and endure. Complex Information frameworks limit organizations from having the option to adjust so as to contend or use new innovation and ideas. Organizations without a strong establishment face the accompanying dangers: The impacts of developing multifaceted nature on business activities The weight that deftness puts the establishment of execution Role of business discipline in current national and worlds of politics Role of expenses without establishment of execution Business nimbleness progressively relies upon a Foundation of Execution. Actualizing normalize, digitized forms brings about less complex innovation situations, lower cost activities and more prominent nimbleness. 4) A working model has two measurements: business process normalization and incorporation. Organizations are portrayed into the accompanying Operating Models: Expansion: Low Standardization, Low Integration Coordination: Low Standardization, High Integration Replication: High Standardization, Low Integration Unification: High Standardization, High Integration Models: a. Unification Model â⬠Delta Airlines Comprised of numerous IT stages unfit to speak with one another Management and IT staff arrived at a typical comprehension of what abilities the organization would create to help future systems. So as to make an unmistakable vision the board characterized four center procedures. b. Broadening Model â⬠Carlson Companies Each of Carlsonââ¬â¢s arrangement of organizations run pretty much autonomously of one another. Carlsonââ¬â¢s endeavor design center graph shares specialized framework administrations while the specialty units hold authority over neighborhood business procedures and IT applications c. Coordination Model â⬠MetLife MetLifeââ¬â¢s procedure and working model concentrated on giving incorporated client care across items. This necessary extraction of client data and making it halfway accessible d. Replication Model â⬠ING DIRECT ING DIRECTââ¬â¢s administration modules digitize normalized forms over its specialty units. The recognizable proof of significant assistance classifications assists the executives with understanding existing capacities and target new chances. 5) The four phases of Architecture Maturity are: Business Silo Architecture: where organizations hope to expand singular specialty unit needs or useful needs Normalized Technology Architecture: giving IT efficiencies through innovation normalization and, much of the time, expanded centralization of innovation the executives Streamlined center design: gives companywide information and procedure normalization as fitting for the working model Business Modularity Architecture: where organizations oversee and reuse approximately coupled IT-empowered business process parts to save worldwide measures while empowering neighborhood contrasts 6) The key ramifications of the four design stages are as per the following: Business Silos â⬠Local/Functional streamlining Normalized Technology/IT productivity Advanced center/Business Operational effectiveness Business Modularity/Strategic Agility 7) The three principle fixings 0f the IT Engagement Model: Companywide IT administration: choice rights and responsibility structure to empower alluring conduct in its utilization Project the board: formalizedâ project technique, with clear expectations and ordinary checkpoints Linking components: procedures and dynamic bodies that adjust motivating forces and associate the task level exercises to the general IT administration. 8) IT administration is the choice rights and responsibility system for empowering alluring practices in its utilization. IT administration reflects more extensive corporate administration standards while concentrating on the administration and utilization of IT to accomplish corporate execution objectives. IT administration includes five significant choice territories identified with the administration and utilization of IT in a firm, which should all be driven by the working model: I. IT standards: significant level choices about the key job of IT in the business II. Undertaking engineering: the sorting out rationale for business procedures and IT foundation III. IT framework: halfway organized, shared IT administrations giving piece of the establishment of execution IV. Business application needs: business prerequisites for bought or inside created IT applications that both use and manufacture the establishment for execution V. Prioritization and venture: choices about how much and where to put resources into IT, including venture endorsement and support procedures. 9) Linking systems is the third fundamental element of the IT commitment model. Connecting instruments interface companywide administration and tasks. Great IT administration guarantees that thereââ¬â¢s clear heading on the best way to develop the companyââ¬â¢s establishment. Great venture the board guarantees that tasks are executed successfully, proficiently, and in a steady way to augment learning. Great connecting components guarantee that ventures gradually construct the companyââ¬â¢s establishment and that the structure of the companyââ¬â¢s establishment is educated by ventures. There are three sorts of connecting systems (design linkage, business linkage, and arrangement linkage) that address the key arrangement and coordination worries of the organization. Design Linkage builds up and refreshes principles, surveys ventures for consistence, and supports exemptions. Engineering linkage interfaces the IT administration choices about engineering with venture structure choices. Business linkage guarantees that business objectives are made an interpretation of successfully into projectâ goals. Business linkage organizes ventures, associates them to bigger change endeavors, and concentrates extends on tackling explicit issues in the most ideal manner. Arrangement linkage components guarantee continuous correspondence and exchange among IT and business concerns. Business IT relationship troughs and Business unit CIOs are regularly a basic linkage fro interpreting to and fro between business objectives and IT imperatives. 10) The three elements of commitment that make business esteem are IT administration, Project the executives and Linking instruments. Clear, explicit, and noteworthy destinations: In request to be successful, IT commitment models explain vital targets so normalization and mix necessities are clear. Inspiration to meet organization objectives: Formal motivating forces, for example, extra plans, yearly audits, and so on help guarantee center from specialty unit pioneers and venture supervisors on organization, specialty unit and task objectives Requirement authority: Formal implementations, for example, integral to formal motivations help manufacture an effortââ¬â¢s believability. Implementation gives a procedure to evolving, stopping, or giving an exemption to a task that isn't agreeable with the objective undertaking engineering. Early Intervention and avoidance: In request to forestall awful arrangements structure being condescended, IT bunches draw in with business ventures during the most punctual phases of advancement to keep awful arrangements from being planned in any case and furthermore to figure out how to improve target design. Straightforward, ordinary, two-way correspondence: Good commitment guarantees that everybody is sure about how the model functions. Arrangement and coordination are accomplished and kept up through ordinary exchange among business and IT and across specialty units. (Jones, et al, 2010)â [i]â Authoritative structure determines: The organizations formal announcing connections, strategies, controls, and authority and dynamic procedures; and, The work to be done and how to do it, given the organizations procedure or techniques Building up a hierarchical structure that adequately underpins the organizations technique is troublesome, particularly on account of the vulnerability about the reason impact relationship in the worldwide economys quickly changing and dynamic serious environments.â [ii]â Hierarchical Controls Association Control incorporates any procedure intended to guarantee that association plans are completed the manner in which they were structured. Control in the hierarchical setting can be delegated: 1. Vital controls 2. Budgetary controls Vital controls are generally abstract rules planned to confirm that the firm is utilizing suitable systems for conditions in outside condition and the companys serious advantage.à [iii]à Strategic controls are worried about looking at the fit between: What the firm may do (openings in its outside condition) What the firm can do (upper hands) Monetary controls, then again, are to a great extent target rules used to gauge the organizations execution against recently settled quantitative standards.iii Financial controls have two rules: Bookkeeping based measures include: Degree of profitability Profit for resources Market-based measures include: Monetary Value Added (EVA) Relative utilization of controls shifts by kind of methodology. Enormous broadened firms utilizing a cost authority procedure stress money related controls. Organizations and specialty units utilizing a separation methodology underscore key controls. In connection with hierarchical structure, authoritative controls are essential to quantify the impact brought about by an adjustment in the structure. Connections among Strategy and Structure Procedure and structure have an equal relationship. Structure streams from or follows the determination of the organizations technique however once set up, structure can impact current key activities just as decisions about future procedures. Transformative Patterns of Strategy and Organizational Structure The connection between associations system and structure was concentrated widely by Alfred D. Chandler in his incredible book Strategy and Structure: Chapters in the History of the American Industrial Enterprise. As indicated by Chandler (1962), firms develop in unsurprising examples: First by volume At that point by geology At that point incorporation (vertical, level) Lastly through item/business expansion Chandler likewise says that an organizations development designs decide its basic structure. All associations require some type of hierarchical structure to actualize and deal with their procedures. Firms habitually adjust their structure as they develop in size and multifaceted nature. The three essential structure types are: Basic structure Useful structure Multidivisional structure (M-structure) Worldwide development structure The accompanying figure clarifies the change in hierarchical structure with development and technique. D:Chap11graphicsMultidiv_fig 11.1.jpgD:Chap11graphicsFunctional_fig 11.1.jpgD:Chap11graphicsSimple_fig 11.1.jpg Productive usage of figured technique Productive usage of figured technique D:Chap11graphicsSalesHigher_fig 11.1.jpgD:Chap11graphicsSalesLower_fig 11.1.jpg Straightforward Structure A straightforward structure is the place the proprietor chief settles on all the significant choices and screens all exercises while the staff fills in as an expansion of the administrators administrative power. (C. Levicki, 1999). This kind of a structure is coordinated with center systems and business-level procedures where firms generally contend by offering a solitary product offering in a solitary geographic market. Practical Structure A practical structure is a plan that gatherings individuals together based on their regular ability and encounters or on the grounds that they utilize similar assets. (Jones, et al, 2010) Functional structure underpins utilization of business-level systems and some corporate-level techniques single or predominant business with low degrees of broadening. Multi-divisional Structure The multi-divisional structure (M-structure) comprises of working divsions, each speaking to a different business or benefit focus in which the top corporate official agents obligations regarding everyday activities and specialty unit system to division administrators. Multi-divisional structure has three significant advantages: Corporate officials can all the more precisely screen the exhibition of every business, which improves the issue of control Encourages correlations between divisions, which improves the asset allotment process Invigorates administrators of inadequately performing divisions to search for methods of improving execution Universal Strategies and Worldwide Structures Worldwide systems are getting progressively significant for long haul serious accomplishment in what keeps on turning into a worldwide economy. The accompanying system clarifies how associations appropriate in a worldwide economy: Worldwide extension methodologies Worldwide extension methodologies can be comprehended regarding neighborhood responsiveness and topographical joining inside the organization. Based on these two parameters, four systems of worldwide extension have been shown up at. These are: Worldwide methodology Multi-household methodology Worldwide procedure Transnational procedure Worldwide Strategy If there should be an occurrence of global technique, firms decentralize all worth creation capacities aside from RD and advertising. Multi-residential Strategy Multi-residential methodology is situated towards nearby responsiveness by decentralizing control to auxiliaries and divisions in every nation. Worldwide extension Strategy Worldwide extension procedure is arranged towards cost decrease, with all the chief worth creation capacities incorporated at the least cost worldwide area. Transnational Strategy In a transnational system a few capacities are brought together, while others are decentralized at the worldwide area most appropriate to accomplishing these destinations. Transnational Worldwide Expansion Universal incorporation Multi-residential Strategy Universal Strategy Neighborhood Responsiveness A perception on structure and system The hypothesis created above is just a rule to how associations may structure themselves in their quest for development and worldwide extension. Be that as it may, these are not general standards and numerous associations have succeeded regardless of structures totally out of sync with those examined previously. Associations can likewise utilize structures which are a half and half of those point by point above. This examination investigations the instances of two associations, ABB and Semco, which have utilized contrastingly various structures to actualize their techniques. ABB File:ABB logo.svg Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) is seen by increasingly more worldwide business pioneers as the model of the way that associations should work to flourish in the 21st century-that is, smoothed out in structure, quick in moving data, having representatives who are exceptionally enabled, focused on consistent picking up, running world-class HRD projects, and group working and systems administration globally.â [1]â ABB got one of the most generally respected organizations on the planet, not as a result of its items, or its creative innovation, but since of its authoritative structure. ABB highly esteemed being an association that its previous CEO, Percy Barnevik, saw as being at the same time worldwide and nearby, of all shapes and sizes, brought together and decentralized. Development of ABB: Merger of Asea Brown Boveri ABB was made by the merger in 1987-88 of two organizations whose roots lie in the nineteenth century: Asea, established in Sweden in 1890, and Brown Boveri, built up in Switzerland in 1891. The two organizations were among the flood of mechanical ventures built up towards the finish of the nineteenth century to give gear to the quickly extending electrical force industry, which included creating, transmitting, and conveying force, and utilizing it in modern engines. The vital pledge to the force business and to a worldwide system was shown in a quick arrangement of collusions and acquisitions. These moves quickly broadened ABBs global venture into North America and Eastern Europe. The speed with which these acquisitions were coordinated into ABB was credited to the adaptability of its new association plan. Vital Context ABBs biggest business is delivering and adjusting the gear for creating, transmitting, and disseminating electrical force. The clients in this business are electric utilities around the globe, a considerable lot of which are state-claimed or unequivocally state-directed. Since national or nearby governments either legitimately own or in a roundabout way control the utilities, they had a solid propensity to support providers with a neighborhood producing nearness, both in light of the fact that neighborhood organizations are adding to the nearby economy and on the grounds that they can be depended upon for overhauling and new parts for the mind boggling power frameworks, any breakdown of which can have huge expenses for neighborhood business and for the notoriety of the utility. Yet, they have additionally squeezed providers to bring down their costs and increment the lifetime of hardware, cutting overall revenues for providers that can't accomplish more noteworthy proficiency underwa y. ABB is additionally a world chief in rail transportation frameworks, for example, trains, light rail vehicles, and flagging. Once more, this is a business wherein rail systems are state-possessed or state-controlled and subject to the equivalent to some degree opposing weights to make locally and Elida Hollomanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09652979994197170334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6456823434202470924.post-57886333490060128882020-08-19T05:14:00.001-07:002020-08-19T05:14:05.089-07:00What happened since the end. What happened since the end. Scatterred throughout the years are probably dozens of blog entries which begin with my eternal apologies for their lateness, and the fact that I havent blogged in forever. (The earlier back you look, the closer together those entries were. I used to say that after 3 or 4 days without writing anything. Silly freshmen.) They nearly always start with, So sorry guys, but I have been insanely busy these last dew days/weeks/months that I havent had time to write anything. Here, check out my full page to-do list. This time, I havent written for a week an a half, because Ive been doing nothing at all and its been utterly fantastic. But like any good MIT student, 10 days of that has driven me absolutely insane, so its back to productivitiy! Time to churn out the dozens of blog entries I planned but never wrote. Looking back in the archives, it seems that Mollie, the famously prolific, friendly, and helpful blogger, wrote entries right through the whole summer after her graduation, so according to her precedent I have some time yet. Lets see if I can get you up to speed on whats been going on in my life lately. The last you really heard from me, I had just turned in my thesis and was going to a meeting for a group project. I was none too happy about it, I might add. I have barely slept, my brain is completely liquid, I havent had a real meal in days (I pretty much made a dinner out of Sun Chips and pineapple soda the other night), I feel like absolute crap, and this is absolutely the last thing Id like to be doing right now. Im actually pretty miserable at the moment. Even down to the bitter end, MIT enjoys beating you down and destroying your soul. Right now, IHTFP is feeling pretty one-sided Well, the meeting was relatively painless- we finished most of the work, and all that was left to me was to rewrite the introductory paragraph to our paper to reflect our professors comments on our first draft, but even that was beyond my abilities at that point. I came home, ordered in Thai food, watched a stupid, mindless movie: and slept for 12 hours. When I got up, I rewrote the paragraph I needed, and proceeded to have the most miserable two and a half days of my life. IHTFP is a timeless motto of the Institute. People who dont understand the concept claim that it means different things to different people. This is false. The true nature of IHTFP is that it holds a dual meaning for all of us. Sometimes it means I have truly found paradise. Other times it means I hate this f?$%[emailprotected]# place. Sometimes it means both of these things at the same exact time. Well, last week it meant the second one, and the second one only, and quite vehemently. I honestly dont think Ive ever hating this effing place quite so much before in 4 full years. Tuesday morning and early afternoon I finished all of my work for 1.851 (Water and Sanitation in Developing Countries), which was pretty painless- just a few paragraphs on the readings, and a reflection on the semester. Two classes down, two to go. Now, keep in mind that I was pretty worn out at this point. 12 hours of sleep was not enough to make up for the previous.well, 4 years in general, but more specifically the few weeks of frantic thesis-writing stress. I had barely slept in the previous week, hadnt eaten a real full meal in far longer than that, and was just absolutely miserable in general. So when my D-Lab team decided that our prototype needed a major overhaul on Tuesday night, I almost lost it. At about 6 in the morning, after staying up with one other group member putting together the final paper and finally deciding to go to sleep so we could be in lab within 3 hours to finish the prototype our teammates had left behind for us to complete, I did lose it. We wont go into details, but I basically screamed obscenities into my pillow for a few minutes before collapsing for a few short, miserable hours of sleep. You see, after Sunday nights lack of sleep, the prospect of another all-nighter was absolutely sickening to me. So when I saw one looming on Tuesday night, it put me in a pretty foul mood. I honestly just thought I couldnt handle any more of it. You know that feeling, when youre like, no really, I actually cant take anymore of this? It was sort of like that. I lived through Tuesday night, spiraling into further misery knowing that despite how little tolerance I had left, Id be doing it again on Wednesday night. And its not like any of those miserable all-nighters actually taught me anything, or were at all instrumental in my education. I suppose they were made extra miserable because somewhere deep down I knew that I could just blow off the rest of my work and still at the very least pass everything, and as we learned a few weeks ago, D is for Diploma. Wednesday morning was spent working on the D-Lab prototype, and then the rest of the day and long into the night was spent on my set design project. The good news was that I was actually really excited about my set design project, and even looking forward to finishing it. (I was eventually really proud of my final product.) I honestly dont even remember how little I slept that night- its all just one sleepless blur. I got up early to make some print-outs and got to class with just enough time to pin up my images for our presentation. Our instructor had invited artists and designers and theater people from around the area to look at and comment on our designs, which was actually pretty cool. Id shown off my work in engineering classes like that several times (most notably in 2.009), but this was different, and a little scary at the same time. Because I mean really, Im not artistic. I showed my Photoshop model (which will be discussed in a later post), and got some good feedback. From there I went off to my last shift at work, then to my tutoring job, then back home. The end was truly in sight- classes were over but I still owed my set design instructor all of my supporting materials- inspirational images, preliminary sketches, a discussion of my thought process, etc. This was a somewhat tedious but easy task- it took me several hours to finish all of the updates to my set design blog (dont read it too closely- the last half of the entries were never proofread at all!). That night a bunch of friends were going out to celebrate the 21st birthdays of Andrew 10 and Justine 10. Sarah 09 came by my room at 11, but I was still frantically writing. I really, really just wanted to finish. I told her Id only be another half hour at the most, and that they should go ahead without me. I finally finished all my updates (at 11:13 PM, according to the timestamp- I can never f igure out how to make those things be in the eastern time zone) and emailed my instructor to let her know I was done. Then, I went out drinking. But responsibly! I mean, we were celebrating a couple of 21st birthdays, after all. We only stayed out for an hour or two, came back to the dorm, ate some nachos, and played some Halo. Then, I got to do something that I honestly dont think Ive really, truly done in 4 years: I went to sleep, and didnt get up until I felt like it. It was absolute bliss. Since then, Ive spent the past week and a half doing pretty much nothing at all. On Friday and Saturday Sarah 09 and I played a lot of Zelda. There are a lot of consoles in the Conner 4 floor lounge. Zelda! Sarah 09 has like, every version of Zelda ever released. And then some. Sarah played some Banjo-Kazooie while I played Zelda. We basically decided to take a break from Halo to play some old school games. Take us back to our childhoods, you know. On Sunday I trekked over to the student center and bought a membership to the MIT Science Fiction Society, home of the worlds largest open-shelf collection of science fiction. Ive know it was there for years, but knew that Id never have time to read any of the books- until now, of course. Im a little rusty, actually- I used to be able to plow through novels much faster than this, but I guess thats to be expected, considering how little leisure reading Ive done lately. But Ive made my way through a fair few books over the past week, and am looking forward to continuing that trend over the summer. On last Tuesday night I went out to dinner with some friends who were visting Boston. Wednesday morning I made breakfast for all of Conner 2 (even though I dont even live there anymore), and then hopped right on a bus for NJ. I spent a couple of days visiting my grandparents and volunteering at my churchs annual carnival. I came back here on Saturday afternoon, went to a party on Conner 3, did nothing but read on Sunday, and convinced Sarah and Adelaide to watch Dogma with me on Monday night. This inspired Sarah and I to watch more Matt Damon, because, seriously, who wouldnt want that? So yesterday I did pretty much nothing at all except watch the Bourne Identity and the Bourne Supremacy. (We finally got tired of sitting around watching movies after that, and decided to save the Bourne Ultimatum for today.) By the way, somewhere in there MIT finally caught up with what I already knew, and figured out that I finished everything. Its pretty exciting to log into my student account and see this: So, its been fun, this week of doing mostly nothing. But it is getting a little boring. So, today I decided to get back to this blogging thing. In a few minutes Ill be heading to a meeting with the director of MISTI-Spain to see if I can figure out what to do with myself next year. (Yeah, while there is still no actual plan, the plan for finding a plan has changed a bit, mostly because Im really indecisive.) Then its going to be a lot of blogging, packing, job searching, reading, and exercising (hopefully, Im seriously out of shape). Friday kicks off Senior Week. My parents, sister, and grandma get here on Thursday, just in time for the Pops concert. And then I graduate! Speaking of which, this is really exciting: The graduation stage has been under construction in Killian Court for awhile now, and everytime I pass it I get more excited. It looks pretty complete by now. And then, well, who the hell knows. Not me. Introduction to Moral Dispute: Gay Marriage Contemporary moral disputes are constantly ongoing around the world and in the United States. For hundreds of years marriage has been defined as the legally or formally recognized union of a man and a woman as partners in a relationship. Up until relatively recently the debate on gay marriage has not been a popular topic. Gay marriage has been illegal in the US and most countries around the world up until the early 2000s.[1] The debate on gay marriage has grown with more and more people publicly speaking and giving their opinions on it, especially in the Unites States. II. Opposing Views Gay marriage has been largely opposed in the US for years now for several different reasons that mostlyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦[3] The strong support of this argument by religious figures, such as the Pope, makes this a strong argument for the opposing side. However, in more recent years Pope Francis has made a slightly less opposing statement, when he said ââ¬Å"Who am I to judge a gay person?â⬠[4] Showing how times have certainly changed in regards to view on homosexual people. American historian Harry Jaffa agreed with this idea that being gay is not natural, he then argues that if people think that this is natural than many other ââ¬Ëbadââ¬â¢ things are also natural. Jaffa believes, ââ¬Å"if sodomy is not unnatural, nothing is unnatural. And if nothing is unnatural, then nothing - including slavery and genocide - is unjustâ⬠. [5]Jaffa argues that homosexuality is not natural because the only natural reason for relationships, according to the bible, is to have children. So, these arguments that homosexuality is unnatural and deviant (once again based off of the bible and religion) couple with the argument that the purpose for marriage, as defined by religion and the bible, is to reproduce, and since two men or two women cannot reproduce they should not be able to wed. An obvious continuation to this argument is the idea that by legalizing gay marriage it is giving the approval of homosexual Elida Hollomanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09652979994197170334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6456823434202470924.post-3375164493257037852020-05-13T15:41:00.001-07:002020-05-13T15:41:03.564-07:00The Manhattan Project Making the Atomic Bomb The Manhattan Project was the Allied effort to develop the atomic bomb during World War II. Led by Maj. Gen. Leslie Groves and J. Robert Oppenheimer, it developed research facilities across the United States. The Project was successful and made the atomic bombs used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Background On August 2, 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt received the Einsteinââ¬âSzilà ¡rd Letter, in which the famed scientists encouraged the United States to develop nuclear weapons lest Nazi Germany create them first. Spurred by this and other committee reports, Roosevelt authorized the National Defense Research Committee to explore nuclear research, and on June 28, 1941, signed Executive Order 8807 which created the Office of Scientific Research Development with Vannevar Bush as its director. To directly address the need for nuclear research, the NDRC formed the S-1 Uranium Committee under the guidance of Lyman Briggs. That summer, the S-1 Committee was visited by Australian physicist Marcus Oliphant, a member of the MAUD Committee. The British counterpart of S-1, the MAUD Committee was driving forward in an attempt to create an atomic bomb. As Britain was deeply involved in World War II, Oliphant sought to increase the speed of American research on nuclear matters. Responding, Roosevelt formed a Top Policy Group, consisting of himself, Vice President Henry Wallace, James Conant, Secretary of War Henry Stimson, and General George C. Marshall that October. Becoming the Manhattan Project The S-1 Committee held its first formal meeting on December 18, 1941, only days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Pulling together many of the nations best scientists including Arthur Compton, Eger Murphree, Harold Urey, and Ernest Lawrence, the group decided to push forward exploring several techniques for extracting uranium-235 as well as different reactor designs. This work progressed at facilities across the country from Columbia University to University of California-Berkeley. Presenting their proposal to Bush and the Top Policy Group, it was approved and Roosevelt authorized funding in June 1942. As the committees research would require several large new facilities, it worked in conjunction with the US Army Corps of Engineers. Initially dubbed Development of Substitute Materials by the Corps of Engineers, the project was latter re-designated the Manhattan District on August 13. During the summer of 1942, the project was led by Colonel James Marshall. Through the summer, Marshall explored sites for facilities but was unable to secure the needed priority from the US Army. Frustrated by a lack of progress, Bush had Marshall replaced in September by newly-promoted Brigadier General Leslie Groves. The Project Moves Forward Taking charge, Groves oversaw the acquisition of sites at Oak Ridge, TN, Argonne, IL, Hanford, WA, and, at the suggestion of one of the projects leaders, Robert Oppenheimer, Los Alamos, NM. While work progressed on most of these sites, the facility at Argonne was delayed. As a result, a team working under Enrico Fermi constructed the first successful nuclear reactor at the University of Chicagos Stagg Field. On December 2, 1942, Fermi was able to create the first sustained artificial nuclear chain reaction. Drawing on resources from across the US and Canada, the facilities at Oak Ridge and Hanford focused on uranium enrichment and plutonium production. For the former, several methods were used including electromagnetic separation, gaseous diffusion, and thermal diffusion. As research and production moved forward under a cloak of secrecy, research on nuclear matters was shared with the British. Signing the Quebec Agreement in August 1943, the two nations agreed to collaborate on atomic matters. This led to several notable scientists including Niels Bohr, Otto Frisch, Klaus Fuchs, and Rudolf Peierls joining the project. Weapon Design As production ensued elsewhere, Oppenheimer and the team at Los Alamos worked on designing the atomic bomb. Early work focused gun-type designs which fired one piece of uranium into another to create a nuclear chain reaction. While this approach proved promising for uranium-based bombs, it was less so for those utilizing plutonium. As a result, the scientists at Los Alamos began developing an implosion design for a plutonium-based bomb as this material was relatively more plentiful. By July 1944, the bulk of the research was focused on the plutonium designs and the uranium gun-type bomb was less of a priority. The Trinity Test As the implosion-type device was more complex, Oppenheimer felt that a test of the weapon was needed before it could be moved into production. Though plutonium was relatively scarce at the time, Groves authorized the test and assigned planning for it to Kenneth Bainbridge in March 1944. Bainbridge pushed forward and selected the Alamogordo Bombing Range as the detonation site. Though he originally planned to use a containment vessel to recover the fissile material, Oppenheimer later elected to abandon it as plutonium had become more available. Dubbed the Trinity Test, a pre-test explosion was conducted on May 7, 1945. This was followed by the construction of a 100-ft. tower at the site. The implosion test device, nicknamed The Gadget, was hoisted to the top to simulate a bomb falling from an aircraft. At 5:30 AM on July 16, with all the key Manhattan Project members present, the device was successfully detonated with the energy equivalent of around 20 kilotons of TNT. Alerting President Harry S. Truman, then at the Potsdam Conference, the team began moving to build atomic bombs using the tests results. Little Boy Fat Man Though the implosion device was preferred, the first weapon to leave Los Alamos was a gun-type design, as the design was thought more reliable. Components were carried to Tinian aboard the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis and arrived on July 26. With Japans refusal of calls to surrender, Truman authorized the bombs use against the city of Hiroshima. On August 6, Colonel Paul Tibbets departed Tinian with the bomb, dubbed Little Boy, aboard the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay. Released over the city at 8:15 AM, Little Boy fell for fifty-seven seconds, before detonating at the predetermined height of 1,900 feet with a blast equivalent to about 13-15 kilotons of TNT. Creating an area of complete devastation approximately two miles in diameter, the bomb, with its resulting shock wave and fire storm, effectively destroyed around 4.7 square miles of the city, killing 70,000-80,000 and injuring another 70,000. Its use was quickly followed three days later when Fat Man, an implosion plutonium bomb, fell on Nagasaki. Generating a blast equivalent of 21 kilotons of TNT, it killed 35,000 and wounded 60,000. With the use of the two bombs, Japan quickly sued for peace. Aftermath Costing nearly $2 billion and employing approximately 130,000 people, the Manhattan Project was one of the US largest endeavors during World War II. Its success ushered in the nuclear age, which saw nuclear power harnessed for both military and peaceful purposes. Work on nuclear weapons continued under the Manhattan Projects jurisdiction and saw further testing in 1946 at Bikini Atoll. Control of nuclear research passed to the United States Atomic Energy Commission on January 1, 1947, following the passage of the Atomic Energy Act of 1946. Though a highly secret program, the Manhattan Project was penetrated by Soviet spies, including Fuchs, during the war. As a result of his work, and that of others such as Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, the US atomic hegemony ended in 1949 when the Soviets detonated their first nuclear weapon. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Management in all business and organizational activities is the act of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively. Management comprises planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization (a group of one or more people or entities) or effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal. We will write a custom essay sample on Classical Approach to Management or any similar topic only for you Order Now Resourcing encompasses the deployment and manipulation of human resources, financial resources, technological resources and natural resources. In for-profit work, management has as its primary function the satisfaction of a range of stakeholders. This typically involves making a profit (for the shareholders), creating valued products at a reasonable cost (for customers) and providing rewarding employment opportunities (for employees). In nonprofit management, add the importance of keeping the faith of donors. In most models of management/governance, shareholders vote for the board of directors, and the board then hires senior management. Some organizations have experimented with other methods (such as employee-voting models) of selecting or reviewing managers; but this occurs only very rarely. In the public sector of countries constituted as representative democracies, voters elect politicians to public office. Such politicians hire many managers and administrators, and in some countries like the United States political appointees lose their jobs on the election of a new president/governor/mayor. Since organizations can be viewed as systems, management can also be defined as human action, including design, to facilitate the production of useful outcomes from a system. This view opens the opportunity to ââ¬Ëmanageââ¬â¢ oneself, a pre-requisite to attempting to manage others. II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Management is often included as a factor of production along with machines, materials and money. According to the management guru Peter Drucker (1909ââ¬â2005), the basic task of a management is twofold: marketing and innovation. The problem of this research is how to use the classical approach to management in this researcherââ¬â¢s job as a manager and determine how it affects the interlocking functions of formulating corporate policy and organizing, planning, controlling, and directing the firmââ¬â¢s resources to achieve the policyââ¬â¢s objectives. III. OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY The researcher aims to use the classical approach to management as a manager, and employ Henri Fayolââ¬â¢s general theory of management which consists of six primary functions of management and 14 principles of management, and Frederick Taylorââ¬â¢s scientific management which focuses on improving economic efficiency, especially labor productivity. IV. SYNOPSIS As the manager, this researcher will lay down the framework of organization first by creating the top-level managers. They will be responsible for controlling and overseeing the entire organization. They will develop goals, strategic plans, company policies, and make decisions on the direction of the business. In addition, the top-level managers will be involved in the mobilization of outside resources and will be accountable to the shareholders and general public. In order to establish a strong, well-founded, and steady workflow, the researcher will integrate Fayolââ¬â¢s Principles of Management in outlining the business policy that will include: a) the mission of the business which is the most obvious purpose: b) the vision of the business which reflects its aspirations and specifies its intended direction or future destination: c) the objective of the business which refers to the ends or activity at which a certain task is aimed; d) the business policy that will stipulate rules, regulations and objectives, and may be used in the managersââ¬â¢ ecision-making(it must be flexible and easily interpreted and understood by all employees; and e) the business strategy which will coordinate plans of actions that it is going to take, as well as the resources that it will use, to realize its vision and long-term objectives, and will also serve as a guideline to managers, stipulating how they ought to allocate and utilize the factors of production to the businessââ¬â¢s advantage. During the operational stage, the researcher will employ Taylorââ¬â¢s principles in maintaining economic efficiency emphasizing the prevention of interpersonal friction between workers and managers, and social tensions between the blue-collar and white-collar classes. To do this, the workforce will be given one seat to the Board of Directors so that they will be properly represented in ventilating their concerns. One good example of Taylorââ¬â¢s and Fayolââ¬â¢s approaches is the case of Bergen Community College (BCC) Bergenà Community Collegeà is a diverse organization that consists of many different departments. The manager who supervises this college is responsible for over 500 employees and a customer (student) base of over 12,000. It is important for a manger to look at the needs of the students and then try to implement the best management system that satisfies all the members of the organization. One factor to look at is the environment of BCC. The main factors that concern the general environment of BCC are the economic conditions, social conditions and the technological factors. At the present time, theà economic factorsà are favorable to BCC. The economy is doing well and most people are earning a higher income. This allows people to go to school and it also allows parents to send their children to school. Since the economy is doing well, there is more competition in the workplace, so one needs a higher education to move into a better position. Also, people could work less and make the same amount of money, thus freeing up time to attend classes at a school. All of theseà economic factors lead to an increase in enrollment. However, these are not the only theories that are found in management. Many ther theories exist, and they all focus on a different aspect of management. Theà Quantitative Approachà uses quantitative techniques, such as statistics and computer simulations, to improve decision-making. The Organizational Approachà is concerned with the behaviors of people at work. This theory has led to such things as human resources management, teamwork, motivation and leadership qualities. However, there are also some disadvantages that may occur. One disadvantage is that with less supervision, the employees may not work hard, thus decreasing performance. Also, there may be some bitterness between co-workers, decreasing the overall performance of the group will decrease. Instead of doing what is best for the organization, the workers may do things only for their benefit or makes them look good and not care about their peers or the organization. All of these forces in BCCââ¬â¢s general environment are affecting BCC in a positive way. They are causing the enrollment of BCC to increase. As a result, there are many factors in its specific forces that are becoming more complex. These factors are the suppliers, customers, competition, government agencies, and special interest. The suppliers are complex because there is a large number of customers at BCC. Thus, BCC has to ensure that they have proper furniture, classrooms, computers, and other everyday necessities. At the same time, the computer system of the various departments has to be properly maintained to make sure that the studentââ¬â¢s records are properly kept. Also, proper maintenance of the buildings has to be maintained. This rapidly changing environment makes the job of any manager extremely difficult. However, she needs to take advantage of the good economy to increase the enrollment at the school as well as try and receive extra funding from the government and special interest groups to expand the school and the programs offered. At the same time, the manger needs to be aware of the competition for the students from the four-year universities and the increasing number of vocational schools. Also, the manager needs to make sure that the staff is doing its most to satisfy the needs of the customers V. DEFINITION OF TERMS 1. Scientific management ââ¬â also called Taylorism, was a theory of management that analyzed and synthesized workflows. 2. Administrative management ââ¬â management approach that concentrates on the total organization. The emphasis is on the development of managerial principles rather than work methods. 3. Top-Level Managers ââ¬â Typically consist of board of directors, president, vice-president, CEO, etc. They are responsible for controlling and overseeing the entire organization. They develop goals, strategic plans, company policies, and make decisions on the direction of the business. In addition, top-level managers play a significant role in the mobilization of outside resources and are accountable to the shareholders and general public. 4. Workforce ââ¬â VI. LIMITATION OF THE STUDY This research primarily aims to use the classical approach to management in this researcherââ¬â¢s job as manager in a private business enterprise and does not include political, educational, and financial institutions. It focuses on employing Frederick Taylorââ¬â¢s and Henry Fayolââ¬â¢s management approaches to find out its effects in todayââ¬â¢s marketing and innovations. CHAPTER 2 METHODOLOGY I. RESEARCH DESIGN This research is designed in several components: Document analysis, surveys of similar business enterprises, and interviews of managements and workforce, and assessment of findings. II. SAMPLING PROCEDURES The researcher will employ the stratified sampling technique so that the identified business enterprises that will be included in the sample will be represented in the same proportion that they exist in the population to enable the researcher draw appropriate inferences. The researcher also believe that this technique could lead to a more efficient statistical estimates. CHAPTER 3 I. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK According to Fayolââ¬â¢s theory, there were six primary functions of management namely; forecasting, planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, and monitoring; and 14 principles of management namely; Division of work, Authority, Discipline. , Unity of command, Unity of direction. Subordination of individual interests to the general interest, Remuneration, Centralisation, Scalar chain, Order, Equity. , Stability of tenure of personnel, Initiative, and Esprit de corps. Frederick Taylorà is often called the ââ¬Å"father of scientific management. Taylor believed that organizations should study tasks and develop precise procedures. As an example, in 1898, Taylor calculated how much iron from rail cars Bethlehem Steel plant workers could be unloading if they were using the correct movements, tools, and steps. The result was an amazing 47. 5 tons per day instead of the mere 12. 5 tons each worker had been averaging. In addition, by redesigning t he shovels the workers used, Taylor was able to increase the length of work time and therefore decrease the number of people shoveling from 500 to 140. Lastly, he developed an incentive system that paid workers more money for meeting the new standard. Productivity at Bethlehem Steel shot up overnight. As a result, many theorists followed Taylorââ¬â¢s philosophy when developing their own principles of management. Utilizing Frederick Taylorââ¬â¢s and Henri Fayolââ¬â¢s principles of management, with little modification so as to adapt to the modern world of marketing and innovations, this researcher believes that interpersonal and social clashes will be minimized if not avoided, and a cost-effective, well-organized, competent, and efficient business enterprise would be established. II. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK The conceptual framework of this researcher focuses on using the classical approach to management in his job as a manager that aims to establish whether it is still effective in todayââ¬â¢s modern world of marketing and innovations. The substance of this study will primarily be dependent on the researcherââ¬â¢s data that will come from document analysis, surveys, interviews, and assessment of findings. III. ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK The purpose of this research is to use the classical approach to management in this researcherââ¬â¢s job as manager to find out if the principle is still effective in todayââ¬â¢s modern marketing and innovations. The type of research design used here is qualitative and institutional in nature. This entails the data analysis which will be extracted from the following: 1) document analysis; 2) surveys; 3) interviews; and 4) assessment of findings. This researcher then collates the data gathered from these areas to ascertain whether the classical approach could still play a vital role in the management of modern systems of business enterprises. Answer: Introeduction: I have found that there have been many concerns about the effectiveness of conducting virtual meetings. Thus, I want to have a quick discussion on the some of the critical areas that needs consideration while managing and leading virtual teams. Here, I must mention that virtual teams have become the norm of most of the organizations operating globally. To be precise, I believe close to around 66 percent of the multinational companies relies on virtual team management for meeting the challenges of the geographical expansion, ensure cost savings and meet the increasing demand for the flexibility in workplace (Aiken, Gu and Wang 2013). However, the critical areas that need attention while leading and managing a virtual team include: Building Of a 24X7 Work Cycle: I believe that the different time zones are a complication but if we think differently, it is also an opportunity for increasing the efficiency of working around the clock (Hoch and Kozlowski 2014). Moreover, greater attention while delegating work will help in overcoming the conflicting deadlines and language barriers. Facing the Unexpected: At some point, there might be a technology failure due to either poor internet connection or the malfunctioning of software. In such cases, you will have to be prepared with either a Plan B or Plan C that can be in the form of dial-in numbers (Fan et al. 2014) Maintenance of Clarity: I believe that the presence of a virtual team often blurs the boundaries of the responsibilities. One can handle this situation by ensuring specific actions to each member after every meeting. Holding Accountability: It is also necessary to create a climate for peer-to-peer accountability that will help in building a sense of trust amongst the teammates (Keil, Lee and Deng 2013). Otherwise, this might leave room for concerns and ambiguity that might not be voiced. Thus, there should be smart handling following a bottom up approach involving everyone. Nurturing Emergent Leadership: Emergent leaders are critical for ensuring innovation. However, when dealing with a virtual team the leaders and the team members should have a shared understanding and sense of acceptance (White 2014). Although, emergent leadership helps in generating positivity but it is important to remember that it leads the internal coercion and burning out caused by the imbalance of the workload. Spotting Differences in Culture: To understand the background of every teammate a critical step needed for the establishment of successful collaboration amongst virtual team members (Verburg, Bosch-Sijtsema and Vartiainen 2013). I believe that expectations significantly vary when it comes to the balancing of informal and formal communication. This is also true in dealing with issues like individualism, perception of time and power distance relationships. For ensuring effectiveness, it is necessary for to use the available tools for making cross-cultural comparisons. I believe that with the consideration of the above critical areas there will be greater effectiveness in leading and managing the virtual teams. Therefore, it not only supports the success of the multiple employees but at same time helps in developing newer capability in terms of the organization. This reflection paper is supposed to be a reminder of my own thoughts for later use. In this reflection, I will talk about my feelings for the class. I will mention my thoughts for the paper, what I learned, and how it will help me with future endeavours. Overall, it will be a brief summary for and of my own thoughts. I thought that in this English class I would have more creative freedom with assignments. Having a topic chose for me to write was not that inspirational. The class overall reminded me of the key points of writing I learned in High School that I had forgotten. It also gave a refresher on how to cite and place references. These are all things I learned at a High School level, but it was nice to get a refresher on them all since I don't usually cite or use references when I type something. While not a beginner, I am no where near an expert. I type things all the time, but not at a professional level. I already learned how to write papers and use peer reviews, but was able to get used to them again in a school setting. I sort of felt like my peer reviews could have been better. The questions I needed to answer didn't sound like they would be as helpful to the peer I was reviewing as much as they could have been. Other than being reminded of how to cite sources and learning how to peer review with overwhelming kindness, I am not exactly sure I learned a great deal. However, I stay confident in my personal writings with topics I know more about. My essay took several forms. I usually start just writing down whatever comes to mind and polish it up after working on the paper for a while. That is when the organization of the paper comes into play. The final version took into account everything my teacher and peers said. They are trying to be helpful so clearly it is better to take what they say into account while keeping the paper as much my own as possible. I just need to remember to organize better so my paper is not as scatter brained as the first draft. I think I did well enough in this class. I am not very proud about anything since there was just one generic paper to write. Something I would do differently in the class would be to try and give one hundred percent to the paper from the start. I find it hard to write an amazing paper for a topic I do not take to heart. Though I think I did an alright job at it. I know that in the real world we are forced to do things we do not want to do, but I still wish we would have more topic freedoms. I did not use anything from my first three classes in this class. Actually I think having English first would have been better than having it fourth. I am not exactly sure how citing things will help me in the workplace, but it's good to know just in case I do need it. English all around is something I'll use in the workplace and in the rest of my classes. Should I need to write a paper for another class or type something for work, what I learned in English class will help me. In this class I was able to be reminded of all the finer points of English writing that I long forgot since High School. It was nice to get that refresher of grammar too. With all my thoughts placed together in this one paper, I will be able to reflect on it later on. I know that it will help me to remember this class should I need to recall something. Reflection is the better part of the day. Well, if you haven't I'll teach you a little bit about it. The reason why I'm researching peridot is because my birthday is on August 18, so that makes peridot my birthstone.Peridot comes in the color olive-green, and sometimes comes in a yellowish green. It is very pretty and it looks beautiful on a necklace or as a ring. When rubbed on a piece of glass peridots streak is white, and the luster is glassy. Every time I see my birthstone it is shiny and it looks very elegant. Peridot was tested on the Moh's hardness scale and its range is from 6.5 to 7.0, so it is pretty hard but not as hard as a diamond. The chemicals used in a peridot are (Mg, Fe2)2 S04. Now, where is peridot found? It's found in Arizona, Hawaii, China, and in Yellowstone Park, Wyoming.Peridot from the San Carlos Apache reservation in ...Peridot is found pretty close to Kentucky, but it's still a while away. Unlike the diamond, peridot is only semi-precious, and i t can still be valued pretty high. Peridot was named from its color. Its color olive green is referred to peridot. Supervision in social work has become an important aspect of determining the success of maintaining the best practices in both the health and human services professions. Successful client outcomes, is the major target of social work supervision (Noble & Irwin, 2009). Through good supervision, high levels of job satisfaction are achieved, while commitment to the organization and a high rate of social workers is realized. The first area through which social work employees are able to perceive the nature of support that they are offered by their organization is in supervision. This is because; social work consists of emotionally charged nature of tasks, which then requires that the social workers are granted sufficient support in order to be able to cope with the nature of their work. Thus, effective social work supervision has been identified as one of the ways of enhancing social workers retention within health and human services organizations (Reamer, 2003). The relevance of supervision in social work draws from the fact that the knowledge of social work has greatly increased, while the population served by the social workers has increasingly become complex. Equally relevant in the social work profession is the need to protect the clients from any form of harm that might arise out of unethical social practices that degrades the clientââ¬â¢s dignity or breaches their confidentiality (Pack, 2009). In this respect, it is essential that all social workers are suitably equipped with the right skills and training to deliver social services effectively, while also ensuing that any form of assistance that the social workers might need to execute social work responsibilities Elida Hollomanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09652979994197170334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6456823434202470924.post-64865218115898027602020-02-04T19:01:00.001-08:002020-02-04T19:01:02.867-08:00Slang Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 wordsSlang - Essay Example Although there are no religious, cultural and economic inhibitions that may restrict its usage, the religiously conservative consider sex as being too serious to be described thus loosely. Most of us think that they spent all this money just to make us buy more and more but is not only that. Their ultimate goal is to make as aware of their presence, they want to gain more and more market share and they also use various methods and ways to attract new customers that they have not yet consider them as an option. In order to do that they have to use some tools and means. These tools are known as Marketing Communication Tools and they consist from five principles -also known as marketing communication mix- advertising, sales promotion, public relations, personal selling and direct marketing (Armstrong, Kotler, Harker, Brennan, 2009, p398). Not all of the tools are been used from the companies, some of them are used less some of them more. This is dependable on the strategy the company wants to follow, at this assignment I will try to critically assess and evaluate two key marketing communication tools that Apple Inc. uses. Apple Inc. founded in 1976 and is one the largest corporation across the world that designs computers, electronics and computer software. It became known by been one of the first companies to mass produce and sell Personal Computers, in 1976 Apple 1 and in 1977 Apple II. Since then they become one of the leading companies both in innovation and sales this is the reason why I choose this particular brand in my assignment. One of the most common marketing tools used by Apple Inc. is direct marketing and as Chris Fill (2005, 4th) defines the companies level in his book Apple Inc. is a type four hybrid company. This means that they see direct marketing as brand vehicle and use direct marketing to exploit market space opportunities (Chris Fill 2005, 4th, p.738). The main tool they use for their strategy is the internet and web-mail since the evolution of technology helps direct marketing to prosper and grow. Apple Inc. exploited that by using huge storage databases to keep track of their customers data and preferences. Their main goal is to build a strong and long-term relationship with their customers by forming a community and to define the word I used I mean dedicated customers that follow Apple Inc. products blindly. This growing community is the power of company; it consisted by dedicated customers that are tied to the company mainly for sentimental reasons slowing rising as a cult. Even if the products sometimes do not meet their expectations or the products are left to die from the company they still follow them as a cult current slowly rising. As an example we can relate to that cult is the Abandoned Apple Newton Brand Community as explained at Albert M. Muniz Jr and Hope Jensen Schau research Religiosity in the Abandoned Apple Newton Brand Community published in the Journal of Consumer Research mentioning how customers off different brands turn their favorite brands into a religion and giving the products supernatural and magical motifs because they believe they are consisted from some kind of magic and will survive through time and at some point they even might rise again like the phoenix from the ashes. From a consumer point of view their strategy is not as effective as it could be; mainly because direct marketing should be more about feedback and customer profile based. From that prospective they should focus more on how they can use effectively their recourses to be more customer-friendly and diverse, they need to give you the opportunity to feedback and give your own advices, after all this are a way of saying to the customer that you care about his opinion and the customer feel that they contribute to their favorite brand. In 2001 Apple Inc. decided to add one more communication tool missing so far from their arsenal, as a result from that they launched their very own retail stores aiming to get higher market share and to bring joy to millions of dedicated customers around the globe. At this moment Apple Inc. counts 324 stores around the world, their philosophy is simple, they want customers to be able to found everything around their technology in one store. The goal is simple, the company tries to be more diverse more interactive and more two-way communication with their customers, this is what personal selling is all about this is what they aimed at. They want existing customers to interact with new customers and sales personnel to interact with both of them. This is the way they make their bond with the dedicated customers even stronger, due to human interaction and tow-way communication the customers do not only attach to the brand but they evolve a special relationship with the personnel that serves them in a way that the selling personnel influence the buying decision of the customer and the customer has someone that knows what his needs and wants are. Personal selling is a great way to learn about what your customers think for your brand, because is a two-way communication and the feedback is faster than from the one you have with research or direct marketing. Is more specific, more consumer-oriented and more flexible than other communication tools but not without a cost. The main weakness is the high cost, the cost for each contact is very high and thus less time consuming methods should be introduced and used for each customer from the sales manager, as an example Germanos ( http://www.e-germanos.gr/ the pioneers in phone selling in Greece) has evolved a very effective and less time consuming model of personal selling, it is called the 5 minutes rule in which each sales personnel has 5 minutes to identify the customer, identify their needs, propose, take him to the counter and closure. Additionally there is always the possibility of misunderstanding due to the human factor involved in the whole process although human factor is a n important part of this process is also the one part that sometimes causes most of the problems the reasons may vary from cultural and religion beliefs to differences in the social status. As a conclusion after doing research for the strategy that Apple Inc. uses we came across equivocal results, despite Apple Inc. market share status (one of the pioneers at their market) and their total revenue their main goal is their loyal customers, perhaps giving more attention on building stronger and life-lasting relationships with their existing customers than introducing the company to new customers. We cannot get a clear conclusion if their strategy is either bad or good, the only thing we can assume is that what they do, they do it to keep the brand image at a level to justify that their brand is for the few and not for the many. Bottom line despite their strategy or their agenda we need to respect Apple Inc. but always have in mind that we need to be critical and analyze everything to see the hidden truth and what is going on behind the scenes. At the end I want to include a part of an interview given in the September of 2010 from the founder of Accer Inc. , Stan Shih, Apple has to be respected. He said that the company and CEO has always been using a different strategy in the computer industry. According to Shih, Apple is looking for revolution, while other PC brands are evolving naturally. Game is a part of human creativity, it keeps people entertained, creative, figure out what to do or better at problem solving. The game can include friends so people will play together or against each other and become competitive. Other than the benefits from playing online games, there are also problems from online games. Two main causes of this addiction is the design and service of the games and the effect is that people have less time.Online game addiction is a problem. The first cause of game online addiction is the design of game. Game designers make charactersââ¬â¢ look and act like humans. Thus player is easily manipulated and they can play it by themself without anyone else. Characters have clothes, hairs, body like humans for example. When player click left-mouse they stand and another mouse they go at moment. Som ething people feel this action like they are going and doing. It is really real to see and they are interested with drag their mouse . The pictures are beautiful, natural, and it looks real making the game more fun.The background pictures are many colors, flowers, water, gardens, trees, 3D of style for example. There are many tools and support players which makes the game exciting. This is like that there is a map load when people want to finish their task. Pop-up windows show up when people use their character to trade items with others and act everything with one option. Another cause is the service of the game. Player can exchange items easily and view all traditional items in the screen. Therefore they can save it in the store or take it out of the game.Players keep characters in their account for the next time they will play. Thus game services attract people to upgrade level of character. There more exercise, the better the character will be compared to others. For example if people saw their character less level than their friends they feel shy and spend more time to play online games for winning in the future. Players can get virtual money in the virtual world. They can buy something in game by this money or put real money into game system. So game provider sells account cards for player check and save money or use it in the virtual world. Many players spend a lot of time to playing online game and have too little time to exercise and study. As a result Children get bad grades, fail their exam and donââ¬â¢t help anything about housework for their mother. In addition, players are bad at communicating in real life because it is they can easily talk in the game and they not only act in the play but also send message for others. Player can get sick because they play too much, which means they do not get enough rest and see the computer screen a lot. Some people play action games or violent game that have a lot of strategy to kill so they act the same way in real life.Online game addiction is a serious problem for everyone. There are benefits, but there are also problems. When players play every day, they will get addicted to online games. The design and services of the games are the reasons people get addicted, and there are negative impacts to people. I think people need to talk about children playing too many games. It is acceptable to play games, however people have to limit the time. Players should spend enough time for both games and their real lives. Thus the life is balanced, healthy and useful. It is said that current policy can drive many companies into bankruptcy. The ultimate result can be that many working class people will loose job and unemployment can increase. In order to raise the profitability and decrease the losses on the economy it was estimated that there will be 40% loss on salaries. That would have a damaging impact on their living and spending. It would resemble the era of post war (Conachy, 2001).Koizumi has advocated a system in order to bring reforms in the current economic status. His reforms were proposed to reduce further debt growth, privatization of certain companies in order to pay off debts of states, and avoid bankruptcies.Koizumi said, ââ¬Å"There will be companies going bankrupt and increased unemployment, but if we are fearful of unemployment, we will never see the recovery of the Japanese economy.â⬠According to Koizumi for any future economic growth first weââ¬â¢ll have to suffer some initial turmoil, corporate bankruptcies and increase in unemployment. There are no such rules to boost economical status in a matter of day or weeks. Quick boost to have immediate financial outcomes is not possible (Conachy, 2001).Japan need to completely reform the current policy in order to get fruitful results. For this Japan will have to go through a recession period. According to Koizumi, ââ¬Å"There are people who say emergency economic measures should come first, but the reason the economy is not recovering is the lack of structural-reform policyâ⬠¦..It is important for Japan to go through ââ¬Ënegative economic growthââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬âor recessionââ¬âbefore it could begin to expand again.â⬠(Conachy, 2001)Koizumi is the fourth candidate in election and suggests that if given charge he would form a coalition government with the opposition parties. His position is very strong in politics and might get most the votes in the upcoming elections (Conachy, 2001).Few banks including Bank of Japan and Central bank are considering increasing interest rates and monitoring the results. The interest rate was fixed to zero but raised at 0.25 at the central bank in last July. The economy of Japan is in turmoil because of policy changes. In many instances Bank of Japan is blamed for these damaging impacts.Japan has the second largest economy of the world. It grew in the last decades because there was considerable increase in investment from the businesses side reaching 2.2 from 0.8% and increased funds from consumer spending to 1.1%. In last December the inflation was slowed with GDP rate of expansion reached to 4.8%.It is hoped that this will cause an economic recovery. According to Goldman Sachs, ââ¬Å"growth suggests there is a high likelihood of the mechanism underlying the economic recovery being sustained in t he first quarter and beyond.â⬠According to Akio Makabe, ââ¬Å"Raising rates would go opposite to the government's policy of spurring economic growth through lower rates and a cheap yen, it would be difficult to persuade the government with a rate hike when there is little inflation.â⬠(Bloomberg News, 2007)The current increase in GDP rates is contrasting government decision of economic policy to reduce the price of yen and ultimately no hike from the government side can be expected due to reduced inflation. Marketers have the mission of finding the best way to sell their brand to consumers. They try different strategies and methods to get through to their target market. Of the many options they have using a celebrity endorser is a popular way to get consumers to notice the brand and to buy the product. However, finding the right celebrity to match with the brands personality is a matter of opinion, and finding the right match could also affect the consumersââ¬â¢ willingness to buy the brand. The current study will examine the relationship in celebrity personality and brand personality, and how they connect to buying behavior. A brandââ¬â¢s personality is what draws the customer in. A formal definition of brand personality is ââ¬Å"the set of human characteristics associated with a brandâ⬠(Aaker, 1997, p. 347). The personality factors within brand personality include excitement, sincerity, ruggedness, competence, and sophistication. Aaker suggested that people want to connect with brands that project a personality that is similar to their own, as if they are connecting with someone they like. Companies achieve this by putting their brands alongside famous people. In doing so, companies are personifying their brand or product. Recently, the issue of pollution has aroused public concern. Some people believe that we couldnââ¬â¢t indulge the environment gets worse and worse. But others hold that the development of economy is the primary goal. Somebody have the opinion that the development of economy can bring the higher technology level, which possibly is the key of the pollution problem. But the people who hold the opposite judgment hold that the environment canââ¬â¢t be repaired even though the new technology has been invented. They appeal to the government that the society should retarded the progress of economic development to protect the environment. As to me, the first view is preferable. The reasons are as follows. As far as I am concerned, the environment canââ¬â¢t be repairable, just like the animals that has be extinct canââ¬â¢t reappear. To conclude, the development of modern society is just like a double-edged sword. With them we may have less trouble dealing with problems in life and enjoy a better-off life. The program provided an interface that allowed the user to answer, or revise answers, to questions regarding the nature of the ESOH technology needs of the customer. The database was originally installed on a local area network (LAN) shared by the technical members of the HSC/XRE office. The data in the database was used, in part, to rank the severity, impact and importance of technology needs throughout the Air Force. HSC/XRE performed substantial analysis on the data prior to its presentation to the ESOH TPIPT, Air Staff and others. Consequently, the database itself became a dumping ground for temporary tables, queries and reports that were generated "on the fly" over time. The structure of the underlying database is simple, as shown in Figure 1. The numerous queries, reports and tables that are antidotal artifacts in the database are distractions to the underlying structure, and should be removed. Creation of the Tri-Service TNS Database for FY97 The source data for the FY97 Tri-Service TNS database came from four sources: ? US Navy, by way of four MS WORD documents (segmented by pillar) ? US Army, by way of a TNS database that had been exported from a version of the software modified by the US Army and/or their contractors ? USAF FY96 TNS database ? last year's USAF database, with needs updated as required ? USAF FY97 TNS database ? current year's new USAF technology, policy and training needs The tasking from the HSC/XRE office was to consolidate the four data sources into a single database and provide it to representatives of the Joint Engineering Management Panel (JEMP) on or before 31 Dec, 1996. Such a database would be known as the Tri-Service TNS Database for FY97. Technical Issues The USAF FY97 database was considered the target into which the other three data sets were to be consolidated. At this point in time (Dec, 1996), the FY97 database still contained "T-numbers", rather than Tag integers. It appeared that there were printing difficulties with T-numbers in the Tag field, so they were removed, and added as a prefix to the need Title. In their place, sequential integers, beginning with 3000, were placed in the Tag field. Next, the Navy needs, which consisted of 807 needs in four word documents, were manually added to the FY97 database using the TNS software. This was a two man-day effort by a program support individual. All attempts to successfully print all US Army needs failed. Most needs contained a data value that exceeded TNS's a single print page. A bug in TNS causes the first page to be printed OK; then, subsequent lines are printed, one per page. It was decided that the US Army database would be provided to the government as-is, with a suggestion that the government obtain the US Army's TNS version to see if the bug had been fixed by the Army. The final step was to export the USAF FY96 TNS database, and import it into the FY97 database. This presented something called the "Match Table Problem." The Match table in TNS contains three columns ? the need number, a category, and a pointer. Depending upon the category, the category would represent a unique primary POC, technical POC, potential user, regulation or contaminant. These pointers are not uniquely generated; therefore, a primary POC with a pointer of 4254 might point to Smith in the FY96 database, while a primary POC with a pointer of 4254 might point to Jones in the FY97 database. The same corruption was possible for regulations and contaminants, as well. To resolve this problem, it was determined that the set of pointers in the FY97 database did not exceed 5000 for POC, regulations and contaminants. Consequently, the pointers in the Match table of the FY96 database were incremented by 5000, as were their corresponding targets in the POC, Regulation and Contamination tables. This assured that there would be no overlap between the two databases. The FY96 database was imported successfully into the FY97 database. Many things have a negative impact on society; one of these things is an individual being isolated. This will not only have a negative effect on society but also on the person being isolated. In three short stories; Miss Brill, Once Upon a Time, and The Yellow Wallpaper the three main characters are each isolated each one being isolated for different reasons. These isolations have a negative impact on the person directly and also the people around them. In Miss Brill the main character is isolated from society because no one seems to notice her, this drives her to live in her own little fantasy world and view the world as a giant play. In the story of Once Upon a Time the main characters isolate themselves from the outside world because they are afraid of what is going on around them, this inadvertently causes them to be killed by what they thought would be protecting them. The Yellow Wallpaper deals with a woman who seems to be suffering from post-partum depression and has been put on a rest cure that supposedly cures the patients of this depression but seems to have a negative effect on the person by causing them to go insane. In the story Miss Brill has a fur that she relates to as if it was a friend of hers Dear little thing! It was nice to feel it again. She had taken it out of its box that afternoon, shaken out the moth powder, given it a good brush, and rubbed the life back into the dim little eyes. This fur serves as a symbol of her inner child as well, when she places it back in the box its as if she hears a faint little cry. In Mansfields Miss Brill the main character copes with her isolation from the rest of the world by creating her own little fantasy world. And now Miss Brill reaches the top of the hierarchy of unrealities. She literally believes she is an actress, a not unimportant one, in a splendid play? Every Sunday, Miss Brill emerges from her home to involve herself in as many lives as she possibly can. Her day commonly involves her taking a walk through the Jardins Publiques, stopping to watch and listen to the band that plays under the gazebo, watch and eavesdrop on the people around her, and after the day has come to a close she stops off at a bakery to purchase an almond cake. Miss Brills most common activity consists of eavesdropping on the people around here attempting to view everything as a play, this eavesdropping is the only contact that Miss Brill has with people. We see the world through Miss Brills eyes and how she sees the world giving us a good insight on just how isolated she really is. Even though Miss Brill does not actually have a conversation with the people she watches she tries to convince herself that she has some minimal amount of meaning to them. To Miss Brill life was exactly like a play, everyone was on a giant stage. In the story Miss Brill has a fur that she relates to as if it was a friend of hers, This fur serves as a symbol of her inner child as well, when she places it back in the box its as if she hears a faint little cry. She saw everyone as actors. Miss Brill is always trying to find some way to keep herself entertained but some things seem extremely boring. Even her part was important to her so she made an appearance every Sunday. She thought for sure that someone would notice if she wasnt there. This is Miss Brills major flaw she tries to convince herself that she has some sort of actual meaning to the people around her when they, in reality, dont socialize with her and dont think any more of her then just a common elderly woman in the park. Miss Brill constantly attempts to raise herself to the standard of the people around her. She is constantly trying to make it seem she is just as important or even more important then the people around her. When she finally realizes that no one around her really cares for her and she just lives a dull little life her world comes crashing down around her. To the people that regularly attend the park Miss Brill might be considered an actress. Attempting to eavesd rop on there conversations while thinking she is un-noticed, could in fact be considered quite comical to the people that attend the park. She gives off many signals to the people around her when eavesdropping whether it is a rising of the head or a tearing of the eyes. It can almost be said that she is being watched by the people at the park just as much as she is watching them. In a lot of cases what is meant to help someone can actually turn out to hurt them, this is the case in The Yellow Wallpaper. When we have the intent to do something positive it will not always turn out a positive effect, just because the intention is positive does not mean the effect will be also. The Yellow Wallpaper is an example of such a situation. In The Yellow Wallpaper the narrator is locked up in a room which is covered in this hideous yellow wallpaper, this is supposed to be a cure for the woman, whom is suffering from post partum depression. The narrators husband, a physician believes that his tr eatment will help his wife and forces her into the room. This treatment, however, does not serve to help her but rather serves as another hindrance and only worsens her condition. Under the instruction of her husband, the narrator was moved to a house miles from civilization in the isolated country, where she is locked into the hideous room on the second floor. This room does not seem to freshen her mind but seems to dull it further and drive her further into a repressed state. During her stay in the room the door is locked and the windows where already barred upon arriving to the house. Being exposed to the rooms yellow wallpaper only serves to further her depressed state and drive her further and further into the depths of insanity. Throughout the story the hideous wallpaper acts as the antagonist of the story. There is nothing to do in the secluded room but stare at the wallpaper. The narrator tells of the scattered pattern as having no organization. Her constant examination and reflection of the wallpaper causes her to over think things and go further insane. This treatment calls for isolation has a repressive factor .The narrator did not believe isolation would cure her disorder. Social contact and outside stimulation was her desire. She was cut off from society and not allowed to see her baby. It is not natural nor is it recommended to be cut off from society for such a long period of time. Society provides an array of different sights, sounds, feelings and stimuli to the people who inhabit it. Going without human contact is not what is meant for people to be exposed to. To fulfill her need to be near people she invents a person she thinks lives inside the wallpaper. The image of a woman is clearly an effect of delirium on the narrator from prolonged isolation. Her psychosis becomes so in depth that she becomes involved with her imagined character. In a frantic action the now malfunctioning narrator began to try to free the women from behind the wallpapers pattern. She destroys yards of the wallpaper. The treatment contributes to her im pending mental demise she is first diagnosed with a minor nervous disorder. On her last day of treatment she is participating with hallucinations as if they are real. This obviously shows that the appointed cure only serves to fortify the minor illness. The negative qualities of the rehabilitation regimen cause her to go insane. Towards the end of the story, the narrator is delirious and constantly creeping around the room. Her husband goes into the room and upon seeing his wife in a deranged state creeping through the torn wallpaper falls on the floor and faints. Clearly this treatment is issued with good intentions, but fails to bring about positive results. The lack of social exposure, physical repression, and ugly wallpaper causes the treatment to be very ineffective and detrimental. The room is the main cause of her delirium with the psych ward like details. When Nadine Gordimer was asked to write a childrens story, she replied with a short story titled Once Upon A Time. Although the title is common of a fairy tale, the tale ends in something other then the common happily ever after. Gordimer distorts the fairy tale by dealing with certain issues in society rather than giving the reader the usual fairy tale characteristics. The first story seems to give insight to how the main story came about. Three of the more significant issues Gordimer likes to deal with in her story are racial discrimination and prejudice, societys insecurities, and the way isolation works on the human mind. Gordimers Once Upon A Time has the feeling of insecurity right away. In the first part of her story, Gordimer reminds us of our own insecurities. She brings up a familiar situation in which one is awakened by a bump in the night and cannot go back to sleep because of fear or their own insecurities. Gordimer writes that she has no burglar bars, no gun under the p illow, but I have the same fears as people who do take these precautions. So, to better convey this issue of societys insecurities, she tells herself a bedtime story. In the story, there is a family who is living happily ever after, yet is seems it is all that they can do to keep it that way. Rather than putting their insecurities aside and getting on with their lives, they feel that they must put their trust in security devices to protect their selves, thus isolating themselves from the outside world. For a short while, the family has a sense of security by posting a plaque stating YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED over the silhouette of a prospective intruder. After a short time the familys psychological need for more security calls for a number of new security devices in order to sustain the top level of security. It is in the familys pursuit of this security that they virtually imprison themselves. After the family has had burglar bars installed, Gordimer now describes the view from each window as looking at the sky and trees through the bars. The language Nadine Gordimer uses in her story is reminiscent of childrens stories and fairy tales. First of all, the title, Once Upon A Time, is the epitome of a fairy tale; it is the most familiar opening line. The language she uses is simplistic, the story is full of simple vocabulary, and has very simple sentence structure. The author also makes use of repetition. The phrases, HAVE BEEN WARNED, and living happily ever after are repeated several times throughout the story. This simplistic language is often seen in fairy tales because it makes them easy to understand. Gordimers story shows how foolish it is to isolate yourself based on just a fear of the outside world. Through these three stories we see how bad isolation can affect our everyday lives. The subject of isolation can cause us to suffer form an extreme delirium greater then any disease that it is trying to cure, it can serve to create a fantasy world in which someone can live until that world is brought down around them, and lastly it can serve as a destruction to someones life because they are afraid of what can happen to them in society. Isolation definitely has a negative effect on society and the people within it, the extent of this effect can depend on a number of factors such as the people the isolation is affecting, the situation under which the isolation is administered, and even the psychological stability of the person being isolated. People who are isolated can never benefit from this isolation but it can only serve as a hindrance to them. It is to be hoped that writers wont make the mistake of applying that particular adjective to doers of evil deeds. The adjective famous has the meaning honored for achievement. To describe those who do evil attention-getting things, we have the words infamous and notorious. The word infamous expresses the idea that the person or incident described is one of a vicious, contemptible, or criminal nature. The word notorious once meant simply widely-known, but for many centuries has been used as a word of condemnation. For example, Albert Schweitzer was a famous medical missionary to Africa, but Al Capone was a notorious gangster. Each of these adjectives has a corresponding abstract noun: famous / fame infamous / infamy notorious / notoriety On this very day in 1941, President Roosevelt remarked that the date December 7, 1941 would live in infamy. The life in urban places usually affect people and their lives as they undertake their daily chores. Peopleââ¬â¢s lives comprising of actions, relationships among city dwellers, and other activities are essential physical structures in any setting deemed to be a city Lewis Mumfordââ¬â¢s point of view coincides with Louis Wirthââ¬â¢s stand that the city influences entire relationships among people living within it as well as their development activities. The author also decries the failure by city dwellers to comprehend and embrace the functional social setups of the city. Mumford expands the point of projection that people view the city from and delves into the analysis of the same a social institution instead of the traditional physical fact perspective. According to him, the city is a wholesome sense in itself, is a topographical plexus, an institutional proc ess, an economic organization, a platform for social action, and a hitherto artistic symbol of collective unity. Mumford moves away from the built environment while making analysis of a city. His viewpoint is rather broad and includes evaluation of the city as a centre of social set of connections and a theatre where people work out their definite activities by engaging in both cooperative and conflicting personalities, groups, and events to produce results that are more significant. The author appreciates the role of built environment as a natural habitat but he limits that role to a well-choreographed set stage. According to him, the built environment facilitates and in the process intensifies the performance of actors who are people in this case. The author explains that the primary character of a city is to create drama as much as all the basic structures of cities exist in other setups including suburbs as well. However, Mumford asserts the opportunity of engaging in social dis harmony and conflict only happens to those who access urban proximities and densities. In his words, a city is a special framework shaped towards the creation and development of differentiated chances for common life and an integral component of social drama. Lewis Mumford advanced the polynucleated ideology in the setup of contemporary cities. This idea proposes cities with various centres, which differs from mononucleated cities. These are cities with one centre. Mumford believes that his proposal comes with multiple benefits including the capacity to allow cities to expand constantly while the administration subdivides them into districts. This ideology would allow the expansion of emerging sprawls but with human considerations understanding aspects that are both manageable and practical. According to him, the practical factors should get the chance to determine the limiting factors including density, size, layout of the city, and area that deviate from the traditional technologi cal concerns and geographical reasons. Mumford highlights that limitations on size, area, and density are important to enhance effective social interactions bringing a better sociological understanding. Cities have the capacity to promote acceptable social values among the dwellers and increase the ability of human relationships and personalities. Mumford further defines a city as a space of societal culture and civilization. The manufacturing methods used in mass production in comparison to those used in less developed regions is way very different, in mass production, the methods used are very advanced and fast to produce, new design are being tried and tested so as to improve the future designs while at the same time improve its accuracy and reliability. In less developed region, the manufacturing methods lack the new technology hand in it and thus are faced with the challenge of producing as many numbers as possible. For instance, in Russia the Izhevsk production method is the chief mass manufacture of the riffle, producing in mass numbers and has equally sold over 50 million units since its inception. My dad would always tell me to rub them together, like you would in order to make fire. And so I did it. I rubbed and rubbed and rubbed. My fingers grind against each other from the tips of my little fingers to the base of my palm, but none of this worked. My hands still are cold, stone cold. Then my dad said after watching me rub for a whole 3 minutes: You can stop rubbing your hands when they are warm again, as rubbing would make your skin raw. I replied: But theyre still cold. Then he told me to hold out my hand and he started rubbing warmth into my hands; his strong, rough hands massaging my palms, my fingers, then suddenly my hands are warm again. After a while, I wondered: will my hands ever become tough and strong like my fathers? Practice Till You Get Tired of It My Mom is my role model. I guess this is due to the fact that I used to scarcely see my Dad because he comes home really late; he still does, though not as late, while my Mother took care of me ever since she quit the job as the General Manager when I was in 2nd grade. She is the one who is there for me whenever I have a problem, like a robot on standby, but she is also a harsh whip with her discipline though she never hit me. My most notable memory of my Mom is when I sucked at math in 3rd grade. I dont know how to do a problem so naturally, I asked her. However, after she taught the same problem 4 times, I still didnt get it. I was afraid she would get mad, but she didnt and in the end when I finally got it, I asked her why she is so patient. She simply replied practice makes perfect, an old adage I hear very often to this day. The Playful Shadow Everyone in my family has different hair. My fathers, a hair like a bush or a vigilant meerkat or a comb. A comb with black and white bristles because my father is slowly aging. It stands tall and mighty nevertheless, and doesnt ever change no matter how many times you run your hand through the mass of black and white. Other times my father applies hair gel to his hair, though I dont see a point. After all, crew cuts dont have a lot of potential for shaping. In contrast though, my hair is like a playful shadow, flexible and could be shaped into anything. Its of medium length, though sometimes when I am too lazy or busy I dont pester my mother to take me to the hair salon in a nearby department store. Speaking of her, my mother has the smoothest hair in the family. Its silky and sleek almost all the time, and has a certain shine to it whenever light falls on her hair, like twinkling stars on a silent, dark night. Not The Usual It was around my mid-summer vacation. I went to my grandmothers in Taipei, but I stayed for a long time, about 2 weeks or so. I came back home eventually, but before the moment when I stepped through onto the white marble floor, I never realized the beautiful house that I considered as mundane was indeed quite nice. I immediately noticed the sunlight streaming through the tall windows that cover up a side of the spacious living room, as opposed to my grandmothers artificially lit house and the tiny space one is allowed to move in. You really have to pick your way carefully in order to not trip over something. Although this is mean for me to put it like this, especially since I have been accepting their hospitality for an extended period of time but after this time I learned to appreciate the place I live in. The next day, my mother started her usual sermons, Why dont you start doing your grammar workbook. Then I replied, But mother, its summer. Even if I finish it you wont give me any free time. Fine, you can have free time after you finish 5 pages in the workbook. Yes. I exclaimed. Then I thought to myself. Well, this is rare, mother is giving me free time. Home Ruler In German my name means home ruler. It means king. It is like the wind; strong, yet soothing. An energizing gust that one would welcome on a hot sunny day. It is like the symphonies that Beethoven conducted, vivid, strong symphonies. Henry was my fathers name and now I have it. Before that my fathers name is Eric, then he changed it to Chief during college years. But now he is Henry, and I am Henry Jr. On that lazy afternoon when he told me that he changed his name twice, I asked him why he wanted to be called Henry. He replied Because I like the sound of it. What?! You chose your name and my name only because you like the sound of it? Isnt there some kind of symbolism behind it like Chinese names do? I pressed. But he just simply said Nope. Personally though, I do not dislike my name. Its alright, though it could be confusing when people just say Henry when both Yu and I are present. Thats pretty much it, after all names arent good material for bullying anyways. All Alone On lazy days when Im bored, I daydream a lot. Just staring into space or look at the sky and the clouds or whatever that catches my intrest. I imagine various things, from the future, to the past. Sometimes I think of of the possibility of having a brother or sister since I am the only child in my house. I think of other people and their relationships with their siblings and sometimes I feel forlorn, because I never really had a person I can relate to at home. But other times when I see siblings fight I wonder if I would do the same. Chances are I would fight, be the peacemaker, or just let them go all over me. Perhaps I would try to maintain peace between me and my sibling. I suppose things get lively, crazy, and out of control sometimes when you have a sibling, but the more, the merrier right? Stop Judging! Shun is my old, old classmate, a classmate I had in 4th grade. He was a boy who had eyes that stare daggers and a posture or a physique that suggested he can fight well. I always took care to avoid him, for I am afraid of what he might do, especially since he got in a fight with my best friend, Kevin. The fight exploded suddenly with Kevin beaten down pretty badly. But in a strange twist of fate, I had to take the late bus with him, not to mention the small bus is very, very crowded. Time passed and passed, and eventually I had to go on the bus. It turns out that he isnt much of a bad person. I was apprehensive at first, but after a while I got the courage to ask him a few questions and we started talking. It was then I realized the true meaning of the saying dont judge a book by its cover. Party Pooper Rain, rain, go away. Go away so i can play I hate rainy days. The way it brings cool, humid air, and the way it forces me to stay indoors. The way it makes the skies dark, gloomy, and sometimes filled the air with static. It came when I went to Hualien the first time I went there. There wasnt much to do except to roam the department stores that was packed with refugees of the rain, just like my family and me. The rain prevented us from exploring Hualien Ocean Park, the amusement park I was so excited to go to, but the trip prematurely ended. We did stay in Hualien for an extra day though to compensate for the missing day, but that doesnt cover up the fact that the rain ruined half of my vacation. Just as it ruined the bicycling trip my dad and I planned to go on. And the trip to the Sun-Moon Lake. Oh, how I hate the rain. Different Things, Deep Meanings My mother tells me a lot of things. Family values, information, something about maintaing discipline, and many others. However, I find her small tales most intruguing. She once told me about a story about a kid and his mother. The story begins when the child was hit by his mother because he did something bad. Throughout his life, the child was always hit by his mother when he did something wrong. The strange thing is, the child never cried, not once when he was hit hard. He just held the tears in as the mother began her rentless attack, at least thats what I think she said, after all its been 3, 4 years. Anyway, the story goes on with the child finally reaches manhood, and the mother became an old lady, her hair streaked with dull gray, her hands and face wrinkly and her hands dont stop shaking. Then the child, now a man, did something to upset the mother again and of course the mother reaches to hit him as she did throughout her sons life. But this time when the blow landed, the son finally cried. Why? Because his mothers punch did not hurt, while in the past it hurt really bad. To this day, I still dont get the meaning of this little story. Work, Save, Relax I have a dream. A dream to be able to do anything i want. I feel tired studying for tests and doing homework all day. To go to school, back home like a an endless cycle which will likely change to go to company, return home when I get a job. Someday, Id like to travel to various countries, taste gorment food, and maybe even sip on wine. I want to see new things, experience them, and try them. Someday I will make this happen. When my dream turns to reality, this may be when my hair is all gone, streaked with whitish gray strands, and arms that are weakened by time, but I would be happy, happy that my dream is fulfilled. Being free of the bounds of duty, responsibility, and just be able to do anything I want is my lifetime goal. I have a dream. A dream to be able to do anything I want. I feel tired after studying and doing homework all day, and just doing work all day. Someday, Id like to just relax and enjoy, perhaps when I retire. I would travel to far-off coutries and taste gorment food. Serial killers generally murder strangers with cooling off periods in between each murder. Serial killers are twisted in nature. Some return to the place the murder happened or the gravesite to fantasize about their deeds. Serial killers have made many excuses for their killings and behavior such as: Henry Lucas blamed his upbringing, Jeffrey Dahmer claims he was born with a à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã âpartà ¢Ã¢â ¬? of him missing, Ted Bundy said porno made him do it and John Wayne Gacy turned the blame around and said the victims deserved to die. Many killers blame their families for their behavior, seeking sympathy. Forensic psychiatrists and FBI agents have tried to get inside the killerà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s mind for many years. Traditional explanations include childhood abuse, genetics, chemical imbalances, brain injuries and exposure to traumatic events. In true psychopathic fashion, serial killers are blaming someone else for their actions. If their bad childhood is the primary reason for their homicidal tendencies, then why don't their siblings also become serial killers? Are serial killers insane? Not by legal standards. Always looking to manipulate, serial killers will do just about anything to convince the authorities of their insanity. Being declared "legally insane" means avoiding death row...
